ESKOM DSM Project
Indusquip Marketing cc is one of three motor suppliers currently registered to participate in the Eskom Demand Side Management program.
Important facts before considering purchasing High Efficiency 1 motors
- Supplier SABS approved and registered with Eskom DSM Project.
- Consider both Efficiency & Power Factor for overall motor efficiency.
- It is cost effective to replace all Efficiency 3 motors (motors generally older than 10years)
- It is cost effective to replace Efficiency 2 motors (last 10 years) from 22kW down to 1.1kW.
- Replace all Pump & Fan applications with Variable Speed Drives & High Efficiency motors for
savings up to 50%, depending on application. (Average saving 35%)

Indusquip – “FREE DOWNLOAD” Energy Saving calculation worksheet
This “Energy Savings” calculation worksheet takes into consideration both “Efficiency” & “Power Factor” for “Overall efficiency” of an electric motor.
Worksheet allows you to select all of the following: kilowatt, efficiency, power factor, load, motor price,
rebate, working hours, days, weeks & rand/kwh.

IMPORTANT QUESTIONS & ANSWERS RELATING TO HIGH EFFICIENCY MOTORS
- Q: Is efficiency the only consideration for determining a High Efficiency motor?
A: No! Both Efficiency and Power factor have to be considered for the overall efficiency of
a electric motor.
- Q: Why is Power Factor so important?
A: The Power factor of an electric motor is directly related to the quality of laminated core
steel and overall size of stator core – if you have a good (high value) power factor, then
laminated core steel & size of core will be good. Power factor also determines the operating
current of your motor – in turn this affects the amount of electricity used.

- Q: If our Company has power factor correction will this eliminate a motor’s bad power factor?
A: Power factor correction will assist in the overall power factor correction of your plant, but
it cannot eliminate a motor’s bad power factor, due to bad quality laminated steel or small
core size.
- Q: What happens if my motor has high efficiency & low power factor?
A: The loss in power factor can cancel out the gain in efficiency. For example:
Motor 1 with : Efficiency of 94.3 % & 0.84 Power factor is less efficient than
motor 2 with : Efficiency of 92.6 % & 0.91 Power factor.
Motor 2 is more efficient – use calculation in question 2 to confirm – lower current draw.
Motor 2 is more efficient overall by 6.47 %
- Q: What is the difference in materials used in a High Efficiency 1 motor?
A: The materials in a Efficiency 2 and Efficiency 1 motor are virtually the same, except that the
High Efficiency 1 has more, better materials and closer tolerances. Efficiency 1 motor
will have the same shaft & mounting dimensions when compared to Eff2, but it will be
longer in overall length and will weigh significantly more.
COMPARISION 5.5kW 4P - EFF2 TO EFF1
Weight difference = 10kg
Core length difference = 35mm
HAVE YOU CHECKED YOUR CURRENT SUPPLIER’S POWER FACTOR RATINGS?
DO THE EFF1 MOTORS YOU PURCHASE WEIGH SIGNIFICANTLY MORE?

How does the ESKOM DSM Project for Energy Efficient motors work ?
Eskom have a pre-determined table for subsidy covering Efficiency 1 motors in the range 1.1kW
to 90kW in both 2 & 4 pole speeds. (See subsidy table below)
Motor users/buyers can purchase an Eff 1 motor and receive the Eskom subsidy on the proviso that
the old motor is handed into our Company (rotor & stator intact) and “ESKOM Form A” is completed
for control & record purposes. The old motors will be audited and disposed of by ESKOM to ensure
that these motors do not enter the market again.
Calculations conclude that all motors 22kW and below replaced by Eff 1 motors on the ESKOM DSM
Project would be cheaper than purchasing a standard Eff2 motor.
